The Proserpine Junior Golf Club did a great job on the weekend in hosting the North Qld Junior handicap pennants. Our junior golfers then followed through out on the course with great team spirit and some fighting results. The Open team fought it out with the best in North Qld in Division 1 and were very close in all of their matches. The team were up against some pretty dubious handicaps in some matches but managed to square against Townsville and only go down by one game against Bowen and Ayr. Justin Karen, Simon, Andrew and Joel performed well and their team spirit shone through. The team highlights were Simons strong wins on Saturday where he dominated in both matches, Karen's determination to win on Sunday after having to give away too many shots in Saturdays loses, Andrews great game on Sunday to get up 3/2 and keep the teams hopes alive, Joel's good win on Saturday to ensure a draw for the team and Justin's mighty drive onto 18 green to square his Saturday match and to square up against a player who had won his other weekend matches 5/4 off a very high handicap.
In our sub-juniors 9-hole event we had in two teams the Vipers and the Pythons and the kids gained valuable experience for the future. It was all of the children's first try at match play and the hard work put in by Frank Goodfellow and Rod Wecker along with Rob McConnell's coaching paid off with the Proserpine Teams being undefeated at the end of the two days. Franks team of Josh, Mat, Kate, Jordan and Brad played very well and all contributed strongly to the team's performance. Rod was beaming with pride in his team's efforts with Myles, Andrew, Tahlia, Joe, Billy and Kieran showing that the club has some great talent coming through. Dylan also played a hand helping out the Home Hill Cavaliers who were short a player and did well. There will be some pretty big handicap adjustments after the weekend with nearly all of the kids bettering their handicaps. Whilst there were no pennants awarded at this level all players will receive a participation medal at the end of season break up.
It was a big experience for all of the children and their enthusiasm never wained throughout the weekend. Mention must be made of the parents who helped out with the food and drinks as well as walking with the children around the course. Brenda Cowans effort in organising the kitchen was fantastic. Overall the weekend was a great success with the kids really enjoying themselves, the club getting a big reputation for its hospitality and organisation and golf coming out on top.
